Ukraine - Inside the Ukrainian Maker Movement (2026)

Five inspiring community figures in Kyiv, Kosiv and Donetsk dive into the world of Ukrainian makerspaces – community-run workshops where people come together to design, build and assemble all manner of items, electronics, and machines.

Via conversations and personal archive footage, we learn that a makerspace is more than a room with a soldering iron; it's a form of social world-making. Or, as Roman Sakh, co-founder of Ostriv Platform in Kyiv says, Russian bombs can destroy our material projects, but not the communities that form through them.

Accra, Ghana - "A lot of people from abroad order fantasy coffins. These ones are going to France, the lizard and the handbag miniature are going to the UK. The taxi, to the US," says Joseph.

As he talks, he nods at various designs, and walks me round to hard-to-reach corners where more coffins are parked: a chili pepper, a dollar bill, a cocoa bean.

Joseph is a fantasy coffin designer at Erico Carpentry Workshop in Accra. When I show up, he's working on a stately mansion for a funeral this weekend - painting it white with slow, mindful strokes in the cloying afternoon heat, while a generator rumbles. (2024)
